Dinosaur Ridge leads several field trips throughout the year ranging from day trips to multi-day weekend excursions. Please check below for any upcoming field trips that you would like to attend.
Friday, May 25 through Sunday, May 27, 2018
Join the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, May 25 through 27, 2018 for an amazing weekend excursion! This trip will visit the Ancient Lake Fossils private, commercial quarry in the Green River Formation near Fossil Butte National Monument in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This is an exclusive opportunity--Ancient Lakes is a commerical quarry, and Dinosaur Ridge is the ONLY outside organization with permission to dig onsite. Due to these exclusive rights, our 2017 trip sold out, and we can only accomodate 16 participants in 2018.
During this trip we will dig in their active split fish quarry and keep the fish you uncover! Van rides to and from Kemmerer will be with trip leaders who have spent years digging at the Ancient Lakes quarry. Leaders will regale you with stories of one-of-a-kind discoveries! The quarry owners have exposed premium layers within the quarry for our group to explore.
Friday evening will feature guest speaker Arvid Aase (Fossil Butte National Monument, National Park Service). Trip participants will be led be Aase on a private, after-hours tour or Fossil Butte National Monument. Aase is the Collections Curator and Paleontologist at Fossil Butte and has worked at the monument for 15 years. He holds a Masters degree in Geology with an emphasis on invertebrate paleontology. Aase will share details about the preservation process of the specimens discovered from the Green River Formation, and Fossil Butte's role in protecting these treasure-filled lands.
Saturday evening will feature guest speakers:
Ancient Lake Fossils, Inc., quarry owner Adam Lindgren and quarry staff Dain Hanson.
Lindgren has discovered two of only three-known examples of snake fossils from the Green River Formation. Hanson discovered the first-known cockroach from the formation, which will likely be classified as a new species. Lindgren and Hanson will also be on-site for the group's digging hours, and can point you to the best places to discover amazing finds.
Dinosaur Ridge, Field Trips and Events Coordinator, Blake Sullivan. Blake has been at Dinosaur Ridge for 4 years, and has spent more than 6 years uncovering unmatched fossil finds througout western and southeastern US. Blake's most recent find was a one-of-a-kind damselfly that now resides at Fossil Monument. The group will be some of the first to see Blake's discovery on public display.
