Program

This is the Dinosaur Ridge Guided Tour. This program explores four main sites on Dinosaur Ridge with your students, and focuses on fossils/rock layers and how they form, and how ancient climates are different from today and changed over time. This tour can be modified to focus on in-class curriculum upon request.

This program accommodates larger groups of young students at our Visitor Center, allowing them to experience the Backyard Bones: Dinosaur Dig Program in smaller groups while splitting them up between the Indoor Exhibit Hall Trek Through Time, and the life-size dinosaurs in the front of our Visitor Center. Sluice mining is included with this program.

Backyard Bones:

Dinosaur Dig Program

Fossil Traces in Swampy Places

This program is a simulated dinosaur dig in our main dig area at the Visitor Center. This program does not include a guided tour of Dinosaur Ridge sites. This hands-on program is geared toward younger students and gives them a chance to discover dinosaur bones and put together a story about the scene, answering questions such as, “What kind of dinosaur are you digging up?” and, “How did this dinosaur die?”

This program is a guided tour of our Golden, Colorado site: Triceratops Trail. This program does not take place onsite at Dinosaur Ridge. Triceratops Trail features a complete ancient ecosystem filled with worms, beetles, birds, lizards, and at least three different types of dinosaurs. Explore Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus footprints while learning about Colorado’s ancient palm trees and the swamp-like 68-million-year-old environment.

    Junior Paleontologist Workbook

This workbook works best with students in grades 2-4, but can be adapted for younger or older students. Scavenger hunts for the fossils visited on the tour and sections to write and draw what students see is encouraged during the program. There are also post activities that can be done on the bus ride back or in the classroom. $2/student

    Sluice Mining

Sluice mining is a great hands-on activity that can be done before or after the tour, depending on the start time. Sluice mining has been a staple of river mining in Colorado since the Gold Rush in the 1860's. With a recreated sluice system, students can get a small bag of rough to clean, discovering a few mineral pieces, and then take their discovery home with them. Sluice mining is the fastest of the add-on activities, and is on on-site. It will take around 30-45 minutes to sluice with 100 students. $1/student

    Dig Blocks

A palm-sized piece of dried plaster/like clay with three marine fossils (real) inside are available for you to take back to the classroom. The kit comes with the block, brush, and a wooden chisel for each student. This activity can take up to an hour (depending on the student) and it is recommended that this activity be taken back to be done at a later time in the classroom, or at home. $2/student

Scholarships

The Friends of Dinosaur Ridge has the Field Experience Fund available for Title I schools, with 50% or more on the Free- and Reduced-Lunch Program. This fund waives the $3/student fee for the program for up to 250 students.  For more information on our scholarships click here.

The Friends also work with the Jefferson County Outdoors Foundation, which provides transportation reimbursement for qualifying schools.
