Meet the 2020 Dinosaur Ridge Gala Guest Speaker
Dustin Growick is speaking Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 6:30pm (MDT) at our first virtual Gala. Register for the event today.
The first thing you need to understand is that Dustin really, really loves dinosaurs—he teamed up with DK Books to write and publish two children’s encyclopedias on dinosaurs and is the creator, writer, and host of the YouTube channel, The Dinosaur Show. Want to see more of Dustin? You can follow him on Instagram @dinosaurwhisperer. We threw several rapid-fire questions at him and he didn’t blink or fumble…we like that in a guest speaker! This was absolutely last summer when I led 10 strangers across Colorado on the dinosaur adventure of a lifetime. Check it out here.
As a child, I loved dinosaurs as much as most kids, but it wasn’t until I worked at the American Museum of Natural History that I fell back in love with dinosaurs. Why? Because dinosaurs are a gateway drug to science. I don’t care if you’re nine or 90 years old, they’re great inroads to talking about life itself, our planet, biology, and why science is so important.
When we were digging last summer in Rabbit Valley a colleague and I found a jacket of a fossil that had been discovered approximately 5 years earlier. It had been jacketed in left in situ because the field season was coming to a close and there was going to be no time to fully excavate it. And even though I didn’t technically discover a new fossil, I discovered a fossil that had been discovered and basically forgotten about. So in strange wayfinding that jacketed fossil made me feel like I was part of a much larger paleontological story. One not only of an animal dying and being discovered but of an animal dying, being discovered, almost lost the science and then being refound. And once it is actually taken back to the museum cleaned and interpreted, who knows what new information we’ll gain, or maybe—just maybe!—we’ll have discovered a new species, heretofore unknown to science!
My adventures have afforded me the opportunity to meet some amazing people who share my passion and excitement over not just dinosaurs, but for the evolutionary process and the history of life on Earth. If I could invite three to dinner they would be paleontologists Mark Norell and Yara Haridy, and science communicator Alie Ward.
