SUMMARY:Field Trip: Geology\, Gems\, and Minerals\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nHartsel & Buena Vista\, ColoradoJune 13 & 14Join a group of fellow geology enthusiasts for a weekend trip to explore Colorado’s fascinating geology and the rich gem country of Chaffee County in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley! \nThe adventure starts on Saturday morning\, when you board a comfortable air-conditioned 14-passenger van at Dinosaur Ridge and we wind our way up to 8\,000 ft in elevation\, with interpretive geologic stops along the way.  In Hartsel\, that afternoon\, after lunch (included)\, we will spend the afternoon rock-hounding for blue barite outside the Bayou Salado Trading Post in Hartsel. \nChecking into our hotel in Buena Vista later that afternoon\, we’ll have plenty of time for dinner on your own in lovely downtown Buena Vista.  A full breakfast is included at the hotel on Sunday morning.  We will start the day with a discussion of Colorado’s geological history and the formation of Colorado’s gems and minerals\, which will orient us to the day ahead. \nAfter checking out of the hotel\, we will drive down the road to nearby Ruby Mountain (a National Monument) for exploration of the area to collect “Apache Tears” obsidian and deep red garnets\, for which Ruby Mountain was named.  We can compare our spoils afterwards\, while we enjoy lunch at the Simple Eatery in Buena Vista. \nThen\, we finish off our adventure with a short exploration of the Heritage Museum in town (included) before heading back down the hill to Morrison\, with an ETA ~ 5 – 5:30pm. \nTrip limited to 12 participants.   \nDATE/TIMEJune 13\, 8am – June 14\, 5:30pm   \nLOCATION\, ACCOMMODATIONS\, AND TRANSPORTATIONDepart from\, and return to\, the Dinosaur Ridge Main Visitor Center in Morrison\, CO. Rick has been a fossil enthusiast for a long time. He studied Geology at the University of Montana\, and earned his Masters at the University of Texas\, with a focus on Paleontology. Early in his career\, he worked in oil and gas exploration\, followed by over 30 years with an environmental consulting firm\, in remediation. He’s been an avid long-time volunteer with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science\, and now also enjoys leading science education programs at Dinosaur Ridge and sharing his enthusiasm for “reading the rocks” to interpret earth’s long and fascinating history. \nAlyce Olson (“Allosaurus Alyce”) has been with Dinosaur Ridge for 7 years\, and is the lead tour guide for the organization. Then\, enjoy time in the museum’s public exhibits\, showcasing over a century of scientific discovery since its founding in 1902.  \n Go beyond the exhibits and discover what’s hidden behind the scenes! DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nFrom the historic halls of Yale Peabody Museum to the collections at Beneski Museum of Natural History\, and from iconic in-situ tracksites like Dinosaur State Park to the world-renowned American Museum of Natural History\, this immersive experience connects participants to the people\, places\, and discoveries that shaped dinosaur science in North America.  \nParticipants will engage with historic collections\, explore dinosaur tracks preserved exactly where they were made\, and gain insight into both early discoveries and modern paleontological research which links bones\, tracks\, and landscapes into a deeper understanding of prehistoric life.  \nThis trip will be led by Erin LaCount and is designed as a small-group\, high-engagement experience for adult learners and enthusiasts.  \nTrip is limited to 10–13 participants—register early to secure your spot.  \nDate/Time: October 1 through October 6  \nSTUDY LEADERS  \nErin LaCount began visiting Dinosaur Ridge as a young child with her grandparents in the early 1990s\, and began working with us in 2002. Erin is the Education Programs Director and oversees projects in exhibits\, tours\, trips\, and more! DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n\nArrive Friday afternoon to check in at the St. George Inn & Suites and connect with fellow participants over a welcome dinner (included). \nSaturday begins with breakfast before exploring the renowned Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm\, home to an extraordinary Early Jurassic tracksite preserving dinosaur footprints from 200 million years ago. After a picnic lunch (included)\, enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of collections and the fossil prep lab\, followed by free time and an evening geology talk with Dr. Jerry Harris. \nOn Sunday\, take part in a true field experience—excavating fossils at the Substation Quarry alongside local experts. After a picnic lunch (included) and more digging\, unwind at the hotel before a group dinner (included). \nMonday features a full-day field excursion with Lead Paleontologist Andrew Milner\, exploring regional geology\, lesser-known dinosaur tracksites\, and scenic sandstone landscapes. Dinner is on your own. \nOn Tuesday\, we will wrap up with a visit to the Red Hills Desert Garden\, where dinosaur tracks are preserved among striking Navajo sandstone.
