Kids Dig Areas

Kids love to spend time digging in our dig areas!

PLEASE NOTE: These digging areas are currently closed due to COVID-19. Read more about our new safety protocols.

Cretaceous Crime Scene

The Backyard Bones site is adjacent to the Main Gift Shop near the picnic area. This simulated dinosaur dig teaches kids how paleontologists search for fossil evidence, interpret the evidence, and identify the dinosaur from the bones. An interpretive sign helps orient explorers as they get a chance to see how evidence of a dinosaur skeleton may be found in a real dig site.

Keep A Fossil!

Right outside our Trek Through Time Exhibit is our “Seaway Fossil Box.” This sandy replica environment allows kids to sift for items like shark teeth, shells, and ammonites (coil-shelled ancient squid).

The best part? You get to keep one of the fossils! Bury the others, but if you bring one into the Trek Through Time Exhibit, the docent will give you a small bag and ID card for a keepsake!
