Summer Camp Leader

 

Compensation:

$19.25/hour. This is a full-time (35 average hours/week) hourly, seasonal position (May 18 through August 7 with one off week during June 39 – July 3).

Camp Leader Description and Responsibilities:

We are seeking camp Leaders to facilitate groups of 5 to 13-year-old campers for full days of outdoor adventures, science activities, and fun! Dinosaur Ridge Camp Leaders will be responsible for working with the Camp Directors and other leaders to provide a high-quality experience for every camper. They will ensure the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of camp for each participant.

Camp Leaders are Expected to:

  • Act as role models for all participants and Junior Counselors.
  • Lead a variety of group activities each week based on a set and pre-prepared curriculum and itinerary.
  • Foster stewardship for the environment, fossils, plants, and animals.
  • Participate in 15 hours of paid camp-related training before the start of camp (arranged by Dinosaur Ridge).
  • Perform other reasonable responsibilities as determined by the Camp Directors that are directly related to Dinosaur Ridge Summer Camp.
Requirements:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (insurance requirement for diving 15-passenger vans).
  • Must have 3 months (460 hours) of full time or equivalent 6 months to 1-year part-time experience working with school-aged children.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass all necessary background checks for childcare licensing. (Dinosaur Ridge pays for and will give direction on submission once hired).
  • Must be able to work the following schedule:
  • Camp Training Week: May 18-22, 2026 9am to 2pm daily
  • All camp sessions: May 25, 2026 through August 7, 2026 (June 29 through July 3, 2025 is a week off)
  • 8am to 5pm flexibility (the schedule will fluctuate between 9am and 5pm, and 8am and 3pm to allow for adequate aftercare coverage. A minimum of 8am to 3pm daily is required)

Located in Jefferson County Open Space, Dinosaur Ridge is one of the most important paleontology sites on Earth. Our globally iconic site has been ranked by paleontologists as the #1 dinosaur track site in the nation, and one of the most important in the world. Dinosaur Ridge typically draws almost 250,000 annual visitors to our outdoor museum to view approximately 300 dinosaur tracks still preserved on the sandstone slope. Who You Are:

Dinosaur Ridge runs ten, one-week-long summer camps from the end of May through the second week of August for children ages 5 to 13 (completion of kindergarten is a camp pre-requisite). The camp day runs from 9am-3pm with an aftercare option from 3pm-5pm daily. Dinosaur Ridge Summer Camp offers a variety of themed sessions all involving hands-on science, nature, and exploration activities, lessons, outdoor games, guest speakers, and field trips. Our camps are designed to foster excitement and wonder for science, art, and the outdoors while engaging children in our educational curriculum based on Colorado State Science Standards. Dinosaur Ridge is a School Age Child Care Center licensed by the State of Colorado Division of Childcare.

Shift Supervisor in the Gift Shop

We are open from 9:00am – 5:00pm during our summer season (May-October), then 9:00am – 4:00pm during our winter season (November-April)

Who You Are:

The Shift Supervisor supports the Operations Department with the day-to-day operations, staff management, and oversight of a variety of gift shop sales and tour offerings at Dinosaur Ridge’s Main Visitor Center and Discovery Center. While in this role, you’ll get the opportunity to support operations leadership in different strategic managerial tasks. In hopes that you will continue to grow within the organization, this role is designed to leverage your leadership skills while continuing to develop, teach, and harness your potential as a Dinosaur Ridge team member. Primary duties include:

  • Assisting in managing and supporting clerks and tour guides during a day of operations, ensuring all assigned tasks are being completed to a high standard, and that breaks are being taken.
  • Overseeing offerings like Tours, Indoor Exhibits, Sluice, Gift Shop Sales, Opening and Closing, and the occasional Special Event.
  • Helping with the coordination of tours, integrating and supervising tour elements including guides, reservations, buses, props, and other tasks.
    • Ensuring, when needed, that all guides have what they need to succeed each day, while being aware of safety protocols.
    • Helping maintain the tour guide closet so that props, microphones, radios, and speakers are properly put away and are not causing a hazard.
    • Cancelling tours when needed in the best interest of both tour guides and visitors due to illness, special interests for the visitors (i.e., tours requiring wheelchair lifts), weather, or any factor that may arise that will impact the bus schedule.
  • Generating sales to support the store in meeting/exceeding store financial goals.
    • Encouraging clerks to ask visitors if they would like to donate by rounding up to the nearest dollar.
    • Selling museum memberships.
    • Collecting Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) data.
    • Encouraging tour guides to ask visitors if they would like to upgrade to a Morrison Dino Pass.
    • Aiding visitors to find the perfect product or experience that matches their needs.
    • When possible, notifying visitors of any special deals, events, or offerings that are available through Friends of Dinosaur Ridge or its affiliates.
  • Executing the fundamentals of the receiving inventory to facing merchandise on the sales floor.
    • Working with the Retail Sales Manager to make sure inventory is being priced correctly and assigning price tagging duties to clerks (and on occasion, tour guides).
    • Making sure all products are fully stocked within the gift shop. Providing ongoing and consistent training with current and newly instituted procedures and policies, in the moment and during onboarding.
    • Helping and assisting clerks (and on occasion, tour guides) understand any new products, discounts, or offerings Dinosaur Ridge is currently offering.
    • Understanding when certain corrective actions need to be taken, and being able to provide additional coaching to clerks and tour guides as needed, with management support.
  • Training operations staff (clerks and tour guides) for the tasks they are expected to perform, following the organization’s training manuals and in accordance with the regimens approved by the Visitor Services Manager.
  • Such trainings include, but are not limited to:
    • Making bus tour reservations for the future and day of.
    • Selling Morrison Dino Passes, EBT/WIC programs, discounts, memberships, and any other special passes currently being offered through Friends of Dinosaur Ridge.
    • Redeeming Morrison Dino Passes, membership passes, library passes, and any other redeemable passes currently being offered through Friends of Dinosaur Ridge.
    • Understanding the difference between the Exhibit Hall and Discovery Center including what is displayed, and what requires a ticket.
    • Understanding the Audio Tour options, how to sell them, and how to assist visitors with getting an audio tour started on their phone.
    • Knowing how to properly care and run the sluice machine and sluice activities.
    • Maintaining a friendly, outgoing, and positive attitude toward all visitors.
  • Overseeing that the Gift Shops, Discovery Center exhibits, storage spaces, and buses are being properly cleaned, swept, and mopped regularly.
  • Being able to remain calm and professional in difficult situations, and assisting management in deescalating potential conflicts between staff, volunteers, and visitors,
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is full-time, and reports to the Visitor Services Manager.

This position is generally full-time, but part-time options are available, depending on the needs of the organization. This position reports to the Visitor Services Manager.

Requirements
  • Able to pass a background check.
  • Two years of retail experience.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Able to carry and lift 30 lbs.
  • Available to work 3-5 days per week, including at least one weekend day, as well as certain holidays.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Point-of-Sale Systems, or related experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS365 and Google Suites.
  • Enjoys interacting with the public and providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others.
  • Ability to multitask.

Admired but not Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience working as a team and coaching others is preferred.
