Green River Fossil Fish Dig in Kemmerer, Wyoming

Get away and go back in time to ancient Wyoming for a two-night fossil dig experience -- and keep the fossils you find!
Join Dinosaur Ridge on an amazing excursion to dig for fossils in the world-famous Kemmerer, Wyoming Fossil Fish Quarries! We will journey to Fossil Lake, a famous locality known for its exceptional specimen preservation. Situated in the Green River Formation in Southwest Wyoming, Fossil Lake has yielded numerous well-preserved fossils from the Eocene epoch, around 52 million years ago.

Specimens in Fossil Lake include ancient fish, turtles, crocodiles, birds, insects, and plants. What makes Fossil Lake significant is the remarkable detail of preservation, with some fossils showing delicate soft tissues and even stomach contents. These fossils provide valuable insights into the ecology and evolutionary history of the region.

Dinosaur Ridge is partnering with the Fossil Lake Safari quarry (located 30 minutes outside of Kemmerer0. Our friends at Fossil Lake Safari will provide tools to split rock and an orientation where their experts will help to identify our discoveries. The number of fossils you find depends on your effort, skill, and luck, but most visitors find dozens of fossil fish!

Customers get to keep all the fossils they find with the exception of extremely rare fossils.

This trip is one of the most popular that Dinosaur Ridge runs and spots will go quickly, so sign up early! In years past, all trip participants brought home over a dozen fish or more! You don’t want to miss this one.

PHYSICAL EXERTION LEVEL/ACCESSIBILITY

The quarry is at a high altitude (7,300 feet) and the weather can be a little unpredictable. It’s typically quite sunny during the summer, reaching 80-90 Fahrenheit/26-32 Celsius but can be substantially cooler early in the day. Thunderstorms and brief rain showers are also quite common, so come prepared.

There will be minimal hiking at the site, and the only requirement is no open-toed shoes (but they don’t need to be heavy-duty hiking boots). Sneakers work just fine. There will be loose rock and piles around, so shoes with ankle support are best.
