Paint Mines & Trinidad’s K-Pg Boundary: A Trip to the End of an Era

This unique overnight field trip features guided exploration of the Paint Mines Interpretive Park and the End Cretaceous Extinction sites in Trinidad Lake State Park. Come explore the end of an Era with us!

Join Dinosaur Ridge and  paleontologist/geologist Dr. Louis Taylor on a journey south from Morrison into the beautiful landscape of Trinidad, Colorado. Trinidad Lake State Park straddles the boundary of the End Cretaceous extinction event – the dinosaur-killing meteorite and Colorado’s rebound from swampy coastline to Rocky Mountain High. Saturday evening will feature a lecture on the Cretaceous/Paleogene extinction event by Dr. Taylor at the hotel.

On the way, we’ll take a detour to explore Paint Mines Interpretive Park to look where layers deposited just after the extinction event now provide gorgeous, photogenic geological formations. Sights include spires and hoodoos formed by erosive action that carved gullies and exposures of pink, yellow, orange, and red mudstones, selenite clay, and jasper.

This two-day exploration is limited to 12 participants and includes transportation, picnic lunches, hotel, and a field guide. Moderate short hikes are involved.
